HEIDENHAIN LS-486 Linear Scale Seal / Wiper-Dust Lip Replacement Service

Replace damaged or deteriorated sealing lips on your HEIDENHAIN LC 195F enclosed linear encoder. We offer service at your site or at our workshop, subject to machine access, encoder condition, and replacement seal availability.

The service includes an inspection of the encoder’s accessible condition. Functional testing can also be included where suitable interface-compatible equipment or access to the machine control is available.

When should you request this service?

Arrange an inspection if the sealing lips are torn, split, displaced, hardened, or visibly damaged. Missing sections, persistent gaps, or contamination around the seal opening also warrant attention.

If the machine already displays encoder alarms or intermittent position feedback, please provide those details when requesting a quotation. Seal replacement may address damaged sealing components, but an existing electrical, optical, cable, or mechanical fault may require additional work.

Service options

• On-site service: Inspection and seal replacement at your premises, subject to suitable access and working conditions.

• Workshop service: Inspection and seal replacement on an encoder delivered or shipped to us.

• Functional testing: Available by prior agreement, subject to the encoder interface, suitable test equipment, and the travel that can be checked.

Scope of work

The quotation will identify the work included for your encoder, which may cover:

• Recording the encoder model, ID number, serial number, and measuring length.

• Inspecting the existing sealing lips and accessible housing condition.

• Checking accessible end blocks, scanning-unit blade, cable, and connector for visible damage.

• Removing the agreed sealing components and installing compatible replacement lips.

• Cleaning accessible seal seating areas as appropriate.

• Checking seal seating and closure along the serviced length.

• Checking movement over the available travel where practical.

• Performing the agreed functional tests.

• Providing a service record with findings, completed work, test coverage, and any remaining concerns.

Internal cleaning, additional repairs, machine removal and refitting, and alignment work are included only when specifically stated in the quotation.

Buyer checklist — information needed for a quotation

Please send:

• A clear photograph of the encoder nameplate.

• The complete HEIDENHAIN ID number, including the suffix after the hyphen.

• Model and measuring length, if readable.

• Photographs showing the damaged seals and the overall installation.

• Machine make, model, control type, and affected axis.

• Any alarm numbers or symptoms.

• Whether the encoder is installed or already removed.

• Your location and preference for on-site or workshop service.

• Details of any air-purge system fitted to the encoder.

Please tell us about known coolant ingress, collision damage, previous repairs, or existing feedback faults.

Health check and testing

A visual condition check identifies observable damage and contamination. It does not establish the encoder’s electrical performance or measuring accuracy.

Where powered testing is included, the quotation will state whether it covers communication, position feedback during movement, available diagnostic information, and machine-control alarm checks. The service record will identify the tested travel and any sections that could not be checked.

Service completion criteria

For the agreed seal replacement work:

• Replacement lips match the confirmed encoder configuration.

• Lips are securely seated, with no visible tears, displacement, or unintended persistent gaps in the inspected area.

• Serviced end closures are properly reassembled.

• Movement through the checked travel does not visibly pull out, fold, or snag the replacement lips.

• Any included functional checks meet the agreed test criteria.

• Unresolved faults and limitations are recorded.

If additional damage prevents satisfactory completion, we will explain the findings and quote separately for further work.

Important service boundaries

This is a seal replacement and inspection service. It does not include a replacement encoder, accuracy calibration, laser interferometer testing, machine compensation, or certification unless expressly quoted.

Seal replacement alone does not guarantee removal of existing alarms, restoration of original measuring accuracy, or verification of an IP protection rating.

Compatibility

Initially offered for HEIDENHAIN LS 486 enclosed absolute linear encoders with Fanuc interface, subject to confirmation of the complete encoder identification and seal availability.

Other HEIDENHAIN enclosed linear encoder models can be reviewed on request.
